The bloody milk cap (Lactarius sanguifluus) owes its name to the wine-red color of the milk oozing from its flesh. Edible mushroom, the bloody milky is sold as well on the markets of Europe as in Asia. It appreciates the heat and the calcareous grounds. If its natural habitat is mainly Mediterranean, it is now possible to cultivate and harvest it every autumn at the foot of pine plantations mycorhized with Lactarius sanguifluus. More tasty than the saffron milk cap, the bloody milk cap sometimes grows in isolation, but most often in groups under conifers (mainly pines). It can be found near Scots pine, umbrella pine or Austrian black pine. All these pine species respond very favorably to mycorrhization by Lactarius sanguifluus and produce, therefore, beautiful bloody milk caps as soon as the conditions of their culture are met.
