Truffle-producing faculties of the Turkey oak

Sometimes also called Burgundy oak or hairy oak, the Turkey oak (Quercus cerris) is a species suitable for truffle farming. It is a fast-growing species and can be found in many countries of Central and Southern Europe. It is indeed adapted to many climates, even maritime ones, but rarely grows above 1400 m of altitude. It is however rustic and supports the cold until -25° C. It consents all types of soil, even poor provided that it is rich in limestone. It has a good tolerance to drought and is easy to maintain. Like all oaks, it likes the sun, but can also adapt well to a semi-shaded exposure. Excellent host of tuber uncinatum and aestivum, it can also produce beautiful black truffles as long as it benefits from sufficient sunlight/heating.

About the Burgundy truffle (Tuber uncinatum)

Growing burgundy truffles from a hairy oak plantThe Burgundy truffle is probably the most widespread edible truffle variety in Europe. This autumn truffle is distinguished by its black exterior (peridium). Inside, the flesh is dark brown. And it is distinguished by its white veins very present. The Burgundy truffle is an edible mushroom appreciated for its delicate flavors. As its vernacular name indicates, the Burgundy truffle was historically found mainly in central-eastern France. Although it has since spread far beyond this region, in France, Burgundy, Champagne, as well as Lorraine and Alsace remain the regions favored by Tuber uncinatum.
