Truffle hazel

ROBIN Nurseries offers you different truffle hazel plants mycorrhized. These truffle hazelnut trees are produced under the control and license of INRAE. Each of them is labeled, numbered and vintage. They are the result of our controlled mycorrhization process, which allows a high performance in terms of recovery and yield. Several varieties of hazelnut trees are suitable for growing truffles. Among them, we recommend three that perfectly meet the requirements of truffle farming :

♦ the common hazel (Corylus avellana) mycorrhized by the Burgundy truffle, black truffle or summer truffle
♦ the Byzantine hazel (Corylus colurna) associated with black truffle or Burgundy truffle
♦ the fruiting hazel (Corylus avellana) mycorrhized with black truffle or Burgundy truffle

Truffle production from a hazelnut tree plant

Ability of the mycorrhized hazel tree to produce truffles

Naturally productive, the truffle hazel tree establishes itself quickly on all types of soil and generally enters production very early: from 3 to 4 years old. Widespread throughout Europe, it adapts to almost all climates and settles with vivacity in all areas, even in the mountains (up to 1700 m). Of fast growth, the hazelnut tree adapts itself to all soils, including very calcareous, if they are well drained. Counterpart of its fast and intense development: Regular regeneration pruning is necessary to keep a good light through its branches.

Common hazel, Byzantine hazel or fruit hazelnut: Which to choose in truffle culture?

Very close to each other regarding their requirements in terms of climate, soil, exposure and water needs, the choice between the different varieties of truffle hazelnut trees will be made mainly according to considerations of :
- production: If you wish to produce truffles and hazelnuts in combination, then opt for a fruit hazelnut plant.
- ease of maintenance: the Byzantium hazelnut tree is single-stemmed (a single trunk). It has the advantage of requiring much less pruning care than the common hazelnut tree, which is suckering and grows on several stems.

What truffles to grow from a hazel plant?

Our truffle hazelnut plants (regardless of variety) are all mycorhized with strains rigorously selected for their quality. All our truffle hazelnut trees allow you to seed your land and to start the production of black truffles (Tuber melanosporum), the famous Perigord truffle that enchants all gourmets, or the cultivation of Burgundy truffles (Tuber uncinatum), a variety of truffles less demanding in terms of heat and soil type.
